West Nile Update

Taking a bite out of virus mystery

Bakersfield Californian Editorial

Vital and extensive information for Kern and Fresno county residents regarding the rapidly advancing West Nile virus will be at hand next week.

Informational meetings for the public to spread expert advice are being sponsored by Kern legislators, Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, and Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.

With no vaccine available to prevent the mosquito-borne virus, prevention measures and treatment options are the key to safety.

Former TV anchor Don Clark was the first confirmed case in Kern County. Thus far, there have been five fatalities in the state. McCarthy and Florez have invited a panel of experts to advise attendees on how to protect themselves.

There is also an Internet Web site -- www.fightthebite.us -- that has information and links to other information sources.

The Bakersfield hearing will be held on Friday the 13th at 6 p.m. in the Bakersfield City Council Chambers, City Hall, 1501 Truxtun Ave.

A second hearing will be held in Fresno on Friday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Hugh Burns State Building, located at 2550 Mariposa Mall.
